Greensboro Aquatic Center’s Learn to Swim Program with Guilford County Schools begins 13th year

The Greensboro Aquatic Center’s Learn to Swim Program with Guilford County Schools has begun its 2024-25 school year with second graders from Greensboro’s Brooks Global Studies hitting the pool this week to learn water safety skills.

To help celebrate the beginning of the 13th year of this transformational program, Speedo has donated 400 youth kickboards to be utilized during lessons. Students in the Learn to Swim Program are taught techniques that foster a systematic progression of swimming skills to maximize their development over a series of five 40-minute lessons.

“Speedo is excited to contribute to the incredible success of the Greensboro Aquatic Center’s Learn to Swim Program,” said Brian Bayse, vice president, team & specialty Sales at Speedo. “This wonderful program not only teaches life-saving skills, but also helps young people develop an active lifestyle and exposes them to additional swimming opportunities.”

The Greensboro Aquatic Center’s curriculum-based Learn to Swim Program with Guilford County Schools debuted in 2011 with the goal of teaching every public school second-grade student in Guilford County water safety skills. To date, the program has taught over 15,600 local second grade students across 48 Guilford County Schools at the GAC and other local pools. The program is free for all students.

“SPEEDO has been a great partner to our Learn to Swim Program for years,” said Susan Braman, Executive Director of the GAC’s Learn to Swim Program. “In addition to providing kickboards for this year, SPEEDO has provided youth googles and swim suits in prior years. They truly care about supporting our youth and helping to promote this worthy program.”
